[VINYL] For Best Results, Play This Album
"Fly By Night" is certainly an album that helped define the future of Rush as a band, and that probably is a result of this being the first album to feature Neil Peart on drums. Although I became a fan of Rush in with the release of "Roll The Bones" and "Counterparts" in the late 80's/early 90's, picking up the back catalogue began. It has been nearly 25 years since I first paid attention to this album, and mostly that was for the title track "Fly By Night" that is the lead-in track for Side 2 of the record. One of the things I always loved about classic records versus the digital age, artists and recording studios were forced to work in the confines of their medium. It also mean that you had to have a powerful track to lead off both Side 1 and Side 2 of the record, else you risked them skipping the side in its entirety. Thankfully, "Anthem" is just the thing this album needed to make the world stop and listen. Rolling into "Best I Can" and "Beneath, Between, & Behind" just help paint the picture. "By-Tor & The Snow Dog" is an epic recording at nearly nine minutes, and it rounds out the first side. Note that the digital download certificate included has an Extended Ending, which I assume might have originally been done to help eat up the remaining time on Side 1 - regardless, it's a solid full play for the first side of this record. I honestly never paid much attention to the second side of the album past "Fly By Night" until I received this new remastered vinyl edition. I let it play straight through and found "Making Memories" to be an excellent set of riffs, and is perhaps the most mainstream 70's pop track on the whole album. Also of note, seeing the full size artwork for the vinyl release is amazing. I never noticed the references to Geddy Lee as "By-Tor" or Alex Lifeson as "Snow Dog" on the CD liner, but it's clear as day on the back of the 12" cover. The Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) is perhaps the highlight of this entire album. It seems to have produced a much cleaner sound, with very little foreign noises allowed on the record playback. Included is a download code for high quality 320kbps AAC MP4 files that are ripped directly from the vinyl. They, too, are very clean sounding, and I feel sound better than the original MP3s pulled from my old CD copy of the tracks. If you don't mind paying a little extra for the novelty comeback of vinyl, this certainly make a great add to your library.

Rush's First Good Album
The first album with Neil Peart in the band, and you can tell by how much more ambitious the music is. There's a lot of great hits in this one, like FLY BY NIGHT and ANTHEM. Their first long rock song, BY-TOR AND THE SNOW DOG, appears here too, and it's great. The only criticism is the last 3 songs are a little too sedate and ruin the hard rocking tone of the first 5 songs. These final songs are not bad by any means, but they have less energy and interesting riffs than the others (RIVENDELL is essentially the same riff for 5 minutes with whispered lyrics).

Great CHALLENGING Puzzle
GREAT Puzzle. Challenging to say the least. But well worth it. Very sturdy construction, no dust, Color gradients are perfectly true to the album cover.

This is the One to Buy!
Although all RUSH albums range from good to excellent all with excellent musicianship, this is the one to buy. Especially if it's your only RUSH vinyl. Lets face it, some of their songs have been so overplayed that you may never want to hear them again. That said "Fly by Night" has one of those songs on this album, that of course being the title song. That said this album is straight ahead rock for the most part, with no cheesy dated over processed sound. So will this be the only album of theirs to truly hold up with time? The short answer is, yes. Now to the sonics. DMM meaning it is cut directly to a copper disc, and thus bypassing numerous tone robbing steps in the record making process. It is so good that it's a wonder that they don't use this process on all vinyl records. They should start today at the latest. Even the pressing of this album was nice and flat. My only complaint is that the album cover material is thin, although it does include a nice audiophile style sleeve for record protection, and confirm that this is a premium product. My verdict, buy it.

A mini review regarding the new vinyl...
I've been a fan of Rush for decades. Especially early Rush. I regard their first lp as one of the greatest rock debut lps of all time. Having said this, "Fly By Night" is one of their lps I never got around purchasing until now. "Fly By Night" is an excellent follow up to their first. Having heard "2112" before this one, I can easily hear some of that records influences on this one. The vinyl. The description of the DMM mastering sounds plausable. The lp was pressed at QRP. I have to say that my 200gr lp came dished. I ask myself why? It is a brand new release. I ordered it as soon as it was released, during the winter season so heat from shipping shouldn't be a factor. I can only assume that, still, QRP hasn't completely gotten their act together. I've had issues with their (quality, (QRP)) from day one. While the sound is great, I'd be pissed if I had opened this lp, took the time and expense of cleaning it only to watch it wobble on my tt. Thankfully I invested in a VinylFlat years ago. All I can say is turn it up! This one sounds better the higher the volume, just like the debut. Artist 5 stars Content 5 stars Sonics 5 stars

Eclosion

Producto
After strong, if somewhat Led Zeppelin-influenced debut album, Rush released their second opus in 1975. One of my personal favourites of their catalogy, it's very Tolkien-like in it's lyrical concept, Rivendell being quite obvious example. Musically album shows strong progressive leanings, whilst also maintaining choppy more straight ahead rock flavour. Definitely a good starting point for anyone interested in Rush sound of the 1970s!!!
