I'm not sure what the outer layer of the handle is made out off, but the wood underneath is white, like bleached white. Probably a pine as most handles are. It's dull out of the box though anything can be sharpened. I was mostly surprised that the head was polished so shiny. You could use it as a signal mirror if you needed. Regardless it's working well and is nicely balanced.
