The Pencil Set That Made Me Believe ✏️✨
I bought the Winsor & Newton Studio Collection Artist Pencils with big dreams of creating breathtaking sketches and maybe even accidentally stumbling into a career as the next Van Gogh (minus the ear situation). What I didn’t expect was a journey of artistic discovery, personal growth, and several accidental pencil-related stabbings. First, let’s talk about the pencils themselves: they’re sleek, perfectly balanced, and come in a range of shades so refined you’ll find yourself whispering “Graphite is life” at 2 a.m. The moment I held one, I felt like a serious artist—even though the last thing I drew was a stick figure dog that looked like a mutant potato. Inspired, I started sketching: first a leaf, then a tree, and then… my destiny. Okay, maybe just a bowl of fruit. But the pencils make shading so smooth and satisfying that even my uneven apple looked deliberate, like it came from a fancy art exhibit titled “Imperfect Perfection.” The best part? These pencils make mistakes look good. Smudges? Artful texture. A line where it shouldn’t be? Spontaneous brilliance. One of the pencils broke when I dropped it, but I pretended it was a metaphor for the fragility of creative ambition. By the time I finished my first “masterpiece,” I wasn’t just an amateur artist—I was a full-on creator, dramatically blowing eraser dust off my page like I’d just solved world hunger in pencil form. Sure, I’m still not quitting my day job, but this set made me believe in the power of good tools and questionable talent. Whether you’re sketching, doodling, or just using them to look artsy in a café, these pencils are an inspiration. Warning: you may find yourself quoting Bob Ross and calling your cat “a happy little accident.” Highly recommend. ✏️????

I trust Winsor and Newton. LIghtfastness issues, though.
I have other water color pencils but I wanted to try these since I love Winsor and Newton watercolors and have used those for 30 years. Both Cotman and Artists paint. They are very nice! I wish they had lightfastness ratings but I understand those are coming. Meanwhile I have put them up in my window to test. See results below. They work beautifully if you do not mind this issue.and this is as compared to Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle and Albrecht Durer. The pencil is thinner to hold than either of those but feels like a quality product in the hand. They have a sheerness that mimics watercolor from a tube or pan (they are not exactly the same, which is impossible), while still having very good color payout. They melt very well on cold pressed water color paper and they flow. The price on Amazon is very good. Otherwise I only see them at MIchael's where they are a bit expensive even with coupon. I wish they were available open stock. I love the tin, but TBH I don't love the plastic insets which hold the pencil and are already looking fragile. But the pencils themselves seem strong. There is a good color selection in the 24 set. There is just one grey, but you can apply the black lightly for another. UPDATE: It's been one month since I bought them and started a lightfastness test in my not very sunny (winter) window. The pinks and the plum have noticeably faded. I will update in a month and say whether or not this gets worse. The other colors are fine so far though. 2nd UPDATE: Most of the pinks, peaches and purples have vanished or changed so much they aren't recognizable. The red is fading. It is true that these colors are the least lightfast in most sets, but its not a plus for these pencils. My prismacolor watercolor pencils do much better in this regard (though they have sharpening problems). I'm taking off a star because of this. If you are going to display your art, don't use this brand but they will be a nice choice for coloring books or journalling. 3rd UPDATE: this is the last report I will make on my window test, because my point is made, these are not lightfast. However, I did want to clarify something. Interestingly enough it's only when they are used as watercolors that the lightfastness is bad. Used a a dry pencil, only the purple changes color (to a blue).

New Product that I hope stays.
Received my pencils earlier than was supposed to. They came in a nice silver tin with 2 plastic trays. Had a hard time finding out answers about these pencils and finely the Company that makes them. Finely received answers. These pencils are wax based and they have been lightfast tested just hasn't got info together to show whether on pencils or site. The colors are brite but really limited except on greys. Not very many pastels either. Colors close to Arteza and Koor I noor. There is a crumbling problem, instead of large chunks coming out these just crumble and some all the way to the color caps, but is limited to certain colors. Other colors have had no breakage. Hope these colors can be replaced. Have let the company know and the company that sells them will let me know. Will update about after I get info These are not real soft or hard. They keep a point, even arrive with one. Color lays down smooth and rich in color. Layer pretty good and blend okay. It can be worked with. They are not as hard as the Artists by Derwent. I'd say Medium. Not as hard as Tombow pencils. There are colors I love. They have names no numbers and color caps not the same as leads though some come close. Would definately buy again if it had more colors. There is a small amount of dust and I mean small, haven't had any smudging. Replaced damaged pencils. Hope they will get their good reviews to continue making them then larger sets.
