Very nicely written
I really enjoyed this book. (Spoiler): While I was expecting the entire book to be in a colonial setting, it was not the case. It nicely builds up the native setting (before white invasion) and this allows the reader to have a glimpse of the realities in those days: norms, beliefs and the patriarchal society. IT goes in depth to explore the rules of the society and how these allowed for a peaceful living. I really enjoyed the third part of the book with the gradual settlement of the white people- the viewpoint from the autochtone population is described in a very lucid way! Not sensing any threat from these strangers, they allow them to settle on their land thinking that the latter would eventually not survive in their environment. However, little by little their clans people starts to adhere to the white men's ways making it harder and harder for the autochtones to rebel. The end part is even more amazing given the irony of the situation whereby the natives are being judged in the white men's court while it was their native soils to begin with and did not acknowledge the laws of the strangers! A must read! I would have enjoyed to have a longer part after the arrival of the white though. Let me know if this comment was useful to you!

memories to never forget
Excellent work. A trip in time, into a lost culture and costumes. A chapter of the long history of African abuse.

a true classic
African colonization told through the story of one man and one village. Told beautifully through the lens of one tribal leader.

One the best books of the 20th century
Achebe does what good writers do: tells the truth, as honestly and often painfully as necessary. He paints a picture of pre-colonial Nigerian society that is at once beautiful and terrible, avoiding the rubber-stamped anti-colonial narrative of more modern works. In doing this he establishes trust with the reader and identification with the characters he creates. They become, living, breathing people, with their flaws and humanity intact, not cardboard cutouts, puppets to play out whatever political agenda the author may ham-handedly try to enact because it's currently in fashion.

Starker Roman
