Feels kind of half baked
The basic premise of this game is that there are a bunch of game pieces on a board. Some are spies and some are civilians. Each player has a “jail” board with the goal of filling their jail with the spy pieces. The game pieces all look like civilians so you need to use a special pair of polarized glasses to identify them. During turns, players get to choose one of two glasses to look at the pieces with. One pair reveals the spies and the other doesn’t. A set of game cards direct the player to take actions during the game, including arresting a game piece, switching to trying to arrest civilians or switching boards with other players and others. The first player to fill their jail wins the game. The game pieces betray the budget nature of this game. The glasses are made of cardboard and not very resilient so that a bend here or a scratch there will give away which one is which almost immediately. The game pieces in my copy were inconsistent from side to side, probably due to a printing error with one side showing up as a spy and the other not. This made the game playable only if you had everyone sitting on one side. A quality control issue, for sure. Also, having to spend 20 minutes peeling plastic coatings off of both sides of the game pieces was kind of a pain. Then there was the instruction sheet which, frankly was not as well thought out as it could have been. Obvious fixes to some problems were missed, such as the case that a player with a good memory could easily memorize the placement of all the spies. A mechanic to randomize the game pieces on the board every round would really help inject more skill and strategy to the game. Bottom line is this game in not terribly expensive, but it’s not fantastic either. The glasses, which are integral to the gameplay are easily marked to give the “good” pair away and some of the game play elements could be refined to make for a better game. It’s fun for a game or two then loses its appeal.

They do not put real effort in their games
We gave up on this game. Please don’t buy it. I’m sorry but it seems Goliath Games does not put real effort into their games. This is unfortunate as I appreciate supporting game creators that have love for the craft. Quality: bad game-board. It doesn’t lay fly. The cards are just card stock. There’s no rounded edges and no coating on the paper. Directions: the directions don’t jive with the game boards. The game boards also have directions. I would follow the game boards directions but add to the first step “have the other player shuffle the glasses” -the directions imply on the second step that you MUST grab a person from another city and place it in yours. It doesn’t say what you do when your city fills up. So this direction should be optional or say that you can swap out characters in your city, that way it still seems like you got the spy glasses. -the directions should say, player one chooses one frame. The next player chooses the frame that’s leftover. Then they are shuffled and the choosing begins again. Otherwise you might run into what we did, choosing the non spy glasses for 10 turns in a row. The game turned into pulling characters back and forth from eachothers board and lacked any strategy. This game became straight luck. Who could pull the character last and have the card to put him in jail. Did the other person have the card to pull him back out of jail before you filled up your jail? The game also has the glasses component where someone can leave a recognizable smudge or scratch or fold in the frame that allows them to identify the glasses EVERY TIME. Except for initial setup the game is very easy to re set up It kind of turned into a bluffing game with who has the good glasses and who doesn’t? Who has the double agent card and who doesn’t? Are you pulling a spy character or not?

Cool concept. Made bad by unclear instructions, and terrible execution.
I really wanted to like this game. The box art is cool. The concept is cool! Who doesn't love catching spies? From the start, the small instruction sheet gave a basic understanding of how to play. And that's all you get, a basic understanding. The instructions are essentially vague. And you end up with no clear understanding of how gameplay should progress. The actual gameplay is terrible. You are given two pair of cardboard "glasses" one is supposed to be able to discern who the spies are, and one doesn't, I guess. The BIG issue is that the effect is so subtle, we couldn't tell which pair was which. We literally COULD NOT TELL. That is where the main problem lies. The most basic function in this game is just NOT functional. We just stopped playing after about 30 minutes out of frustration. The differentiation between who is a spy and who isn't is subjective because the glasses and the game pieces are so bad. I get the impression that the pieces are revealed and concealed with a polarization effect, but it's just not good.

I Spy a Good Deal
Overall this game is pretty fun. It takes about 5-20 minutes for a full play through (with two people) maybe 30 if you have more than that. The only reason for the star reduction is that you have to rip the coating off every price prior to playing. This is actually a pretty annoying process. After that is done, the game is fun. It doesn’t take all that much strategy or thought, just a basic luck of the draw. The quality of material is good. Definitely worth the price, it’s a fun game to have around, although not one that I would make as the headliner for a party. If you are looking to stock up on games for every occasion this is a great choice. But if you have a limited amount of money to get games and you want to get the essentials I’d recommend you pass on this one. Overall it’s a fun and pretty unique game, but it’s not at that “classic” level.

Fun little game
It's a compact game with a simple concept. It's easy to set up and is interesting. My 12 year old enjoys it, but the younger one not so much. Good game to add onto the rotation of game night.
