Academy Modellbau Hetzer

Very Solid offering from Academy.
I've assembled 100+ 1/35 scale "armor" models over the years, but this is my first effort at the 38(t) Hetzer. I would actually rate this kit at 4.5 Stars if the Amazon grading template allowed 0.5 increments. I purchased this kit for approx. $32.00 "all in" including shipping. At the time of this post, prices for most products are elevated due to increased global shipping costs as a result of the 'CCP Virus'. This kit offers solid exterior detail despite its relatively smallish size and lowish price point. The single piece main gun barrel options are greatly appreciated as most of you know that filling the inherent join lines in 2-piece gun barrels is quite tedious. The top mounted MG is surprisingly well detailed - much like Dragon kits - another pleasant aspect of the kit. The link-and-length tracks, while not easy to assemble, look great and absorb paint & weathering detail better than rubber tracks. My lone "complaint" is that the engine deck and crew hatches must be cut VERY carefully from the sprues otherwise the end result will be uneven gaps when placed. I removed these pieces from the sprues too hastily and the uneven result is annoying if you're an anal model builder. Nonetheless, I would highly recommend this kit for anyone interested in late war German armor. The back story is also interesting as this weapon was developed and produced over the span of approx. 4-5 months in 1944 from an outdated, yet proven, Czechoslovakian light tank chassis with a rapidly designed superstructure. This weapon was highly cost efficient and effective in a defensive role, particularly with proper infantry support. I went with Tamiya acrylics and the "silly putty" method to form the hard edge camo patterns followed up with artist oils, sponge technique weathering, paint brush technique weathering/scratches, pin wash detailing and some enamel rust streaking. The tracks are not finished as I haven't decided on the diorama base as yet.
